A Young Boy’s Journey From ADD to CAPA
Three years ago, Tyrell struggled to stay awake during classes. Even if his eyes were open, his attention usually wandered, and he often didn't complete his schoolwork or homework.
Tyrell was diagnosed with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder.) Since his mom didn't want him to start on medication, he was tested for learning support. Even though the testing was completed, he was not moved to a learning support classroom. His test scores were misplaced, and Tyrell had to repeat a grade.
That year, one of our therapists began working closely with Tyrell, his family and the school in order to understand the reason for Tyrell repeating the grade. Soon the error was corrected. Tyrell was re-tested and was moved to the special education classes he needed.
During therapy sessions, Tyrell and his mom were instructed to create a strict daily schedule. They learned the importance of healthy eating patterns and food choices. Tyrell's mom bought him a backpack and a homework folder. She checked his homework daily.
The therapist also worked with Tyrell to become aware of when he was getting sleepy and losing focus. He learned to refocus his energy and extend his attention span to stay alert during all his classes.
Two years later, the therapist is ready to close Tyrell's case. He is a popular child, an honor student, and well respected by all his teachers and peers. He won first place in the school's talent show for dancing. And the best news of all? Tyrell was accepted to CAPA's middle school for activity and dancing.
