How Making a Good Cup of Coffee Can Lead to Making it on Your Own
It was September of 2007 when Ahleajha was considering participating in the Barista program through Journey to Independence. What exactly are Baristas? They're certified coffee makers that you would find in a coffee shop like Starbucks. They are specially trained in the history of coffee, its origins, and how to make every kind of coffee known to man.
Ahleajha's foster parents encouraged her to join the program. As it turned out, she was a fast learner, dependable and very energetic. She quickly learned the ins and outs of coffee making, and began working as a certified Barista at the Union Project, a refurbished church in East Liberty that has a café open to the public. She worked in the café for several months, and also helped with catering when there were special events at the church. Ahleajha was so good at coffee making that she was often called back to assist new Baristas in training.
Now Ahleajha works in a café in Regent Square. She takes pride in her work and is well on the road to independent living. There are nothing but good things brewing in Ahleajha's future!
